Jazzercise: A Fun Way to Get into Shape

Dieting alone is not usually enough to lose weight and keep it off.  (In fact, I recommend avoiding fad diets altogether.)  Eating sensibly and getting some sort of exercise each week is the best way to get lean and stay lean.

I realize that many Americans hate to exercise.  That’s really unfortunate, because the human body was created to be active.  Nevertheless, a lot of people make up all kinds of excuses NOT to exercise.  “I don’t have time!”  “I’m too tired.”  “It’s too difficult.”

Maybe the real problem is that these people simply haven’t discovered an exercise that they truly enjoy.

Walking is just about the easiest and most convenient exercise available.  Pretty much everyone who isn’t limited by severe health issues is able to walk.  Yet, the most walking some individuals do is from the living room to the kitchen to get something to eat.  Perhaps they need something more challenging!

How About Jazzercise?

I used to think that Jazzercise was obsolete and for really old people only.  That all changed when a very good friend asked me to join a Jazzercise class with her.  I’ve always been there to support her and encourage her throughout all her struggles to lose weight, so I said, “Sure…why not?”

After several months of going to Jazzercise classes, I am grateful that my friend talked me into giving it a try.  I have grown to love Jazzercise!  It is so much fun!

Jazzercise doesn’t seem so much like working out as other types of exercise do.  It is, after all, rather like a choreographed dance routine performed to the beat of good, contemporary music.  Nevertheless, there ARE some challenging moves to learn and perfect in Jazzercise!

Unlike typical dance routines, Jazzercise often incorporates strength training using light weights.  There are routines that test your balance.  There are routines that stretch your muscles and improve your flexibility.  Some of the routines focus on cardiovascular training.  Face it!  Jazzercise targets all of your body for improving overall fitness.

Jazzercise For All Ages

I was so pumped up after my first Jazzercise class…mainly because of two elderly ladies who were giving it their all in the class.  There were younger women and middle-aged women, as well.  Yet, when I saw how these two women (both in their 80s) moved and kept up with each routine, I was inspired.  If they could do it, so could I!  As a matter of fact, I vowed to do my best to be that active and fit if and when I reached my 80s.

If you are searching for a fun way to lose weight and tone up your body, consider finding a Jazzercise class in your community.  It is a challenging workout for people of all ages, although it doesn’t really seem like “exercise.”  It certainly isn’t tedious and boring.

Of course, don’t forget to watch your diet, too.  You’ll be fighting a losing battle if you continue to eat those Krispie Kreme donuts everyday.  Change your eating habits to include plenty of fresh fruits and veggies in your diet.  Cut down on the sugar and fried foods.  Stay away from soda pop and drink lots of water.  You’ll be amazed at how these little changes can lead to a leaner, healthier you.
