Over
Forty? Diets Alone Don't Work! If
you've ever had a weight problem, by the time you're over forty, chances are that
you've tried several popular fad diets at one time or another. How long did you
stick with any of those diets? When you went off a diet, did you end up gaining
back the weight you lost?
FACT:
The majority of people who try fad diets don't stick with them for long. Such
diets tend to be 'unrealistic.' FACT:
Many dieters end up gaining back all the weight they lost while dieting. Often,
they gain MORE weight back than they lost! FACT:
As you age, your metabolism tends to slow down, increasing your chance of weight
gain. Now,
don't get me wrong! You DO need to be conscious of what you eat! You DO need to
be aware of portion sizes and caloric intake! And, there ARE diets that can help
you lose the weight and keep it off! Those are healthy, balanced diets-diets that
don't cut out entire food groups or starve you. But,
remember this: diets alone don't work! That's right! For the long haul, you must
focus on changing your eating habits forever. You should work on being more active.
And, you should concentrate on your mental, emotional, and spiritual well-being,
too! You are not
a one-dimensional being! There are many facets to you! To be truly healthy and
fit, you MUST nurture ALL aspects of yourself! Make
a list of things you'd like to change about yourself. Then, think about ways to
make those changes. After you've given this some thought, set some easy-to-reach
goals and begin working on attaining those goals. Take baby steps, at first. (For
instance, you might strive to be able to comfortably walk a couple of miles each
day.) You certainly don't want to set goals that are so hard to reach, you would
likely give up on them WAYYY before you've achieved them! Each
time you reach a goal, reward yourself in some way. That doesn't mean you should
go out and eat a huge hot fudge sundae! But, do something nice for yourself! You
deserve it! You may be over forty, but you're still good! Take pride in yourself-love
yourself-nurture yourself!
